Early-to-mid March. Preserve as much root mass as possible during the dig. Avoid overly rich amendments at planting — lilacs prefer lean to moderately fertile soil and too much richness can push foliage at the expense of blooms.

Early-mid March: Transplant if needed. Avoid "too rich" soil amendments.
